Level 2: Quranic Arabic for Non-Native Speakers
About this Program
Register now for level two of the “Qura’nic Arabic for Non-native Speakers” program, which focuses on developing non-native Speakers’ cognitive skills of reading, understanding, and synthesizing the language of the Holy Qur’an while minimizing their dependence on an intermediary language.
It approaches language from an applied perspective where all the Arabic vocabulary and grammar rules that participants are introduced to are reinforced by examples that come exclusively from the Qur’an.
This is achieved through:
(1) offering them hands-on sessions for discussing, analyzing and comprehending the verses of the Qur’an through understanding not only the functional use of different grammatical rules, but their pragmatic meanings in context as well.
(2) Participants are also introduced to the different denotative and metaphorical meanings of vocabulary items used in the Qur’an to enhance their understanding of those items in the context of different suras.
(3) Finally, participants are also trained to use online resources that further help them with proper pronunciation and understanding.
If you find it difficult to cover the fees and require financial assistance, please apply for a fee waiver at this link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/jzPdXeg5nH
Topics covered in Level 2:
• The present tense verb, its conjugation, and the concept of the “Five Verbs”
• Negation of the present tense verb and its subjunctive and conditional moods and how the type of a negation article used with a present tense verb changes its time reference affecting meaning and interpretation of Qur’anic verses.
• The imperative mood, its formation and functions in different occurrences of the Qur’an.
• Demonstrative nouns, their duals and plurals as well as mapping them to number and gender to assist understanding of referents in ayahs.
• Exaggeration patterns in the Arabic language and the meaning of each, especially when they are used in reference to Allah SWT.
• Question words and their significance when they are used interrogatively vs metaphorically in the Qur’an.
Completion of Level One; OR Knowledge of the following:
Arabic Vowels & Consonants, the definite article of Arabic, Nouns vs Verbs, Arabic Pronouns, Singular vs Plural, Gender (masculine vs feminine) and Past tense.
• Complement previously learned basic grammar rules with more complex ones that have pragmatic significance, which helps participants understand Qur’anic verses better while reducing their reliance on literal translations of the Qur’an, which may fall short of conveying an accurate translation due to the lack of equivalent stylistic devices and discourse tools that are typical of Arabic in the translated versions.
• Sharpen the participants’ ability to expand their linguistic vocabulary by being able to identify derivatives and associate them with patterns that are mapped onto meanings.
• Provide participants with the linguistic and pragmatic rules that govern the order of words in the Qur’anic Arabic language, thus enhancing their understanding of the way the language of the Qur’an works and the significance of word ordering in shaping and affecting meaning.
• The last week is devoted to hands-on practice where participants deal directly with some ayahs (verses) as a comprehension task, so that the learning process is enhanced practically.
