Al-Mujadilah FAQs

  1. What is Al-Mujadilah? Al-Mujadilah is a center and mosque that offers religious, developmental, and social programming to Muslim women of all ages and backgrounds to study, engage in dialogue, and worship together.
  2. Who established Al-Mujadilah? Al-Mujadilah was established in 2022, by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation.
  3. Why was it created and why is it important? To foster a Muslim society where all women are engaged, their participation and contributions acknowledged and recognized, and their concerns and perspectives shape contemporary Muslim thought and open public discourse and identity.
  4. What does “Al-Mujadilah” mean and why is the Center named after this Surah? The Holy Qur’an is full of stories of resilient women of faith, such as Hajar, Maryam, Asiya, and Khawla bint Tha’labah, who engraved everlasting chapters in history. “Al-Mujadilah” was chosen to follow in the footsteps of those women, and specifically Khawla, who had an entire Surah revealed to answer her dialogue with the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him). The name literally means “she who engages in dialogue”, and it signifies the importance of dialogue and a free exchange of ideas as one of the main pillars to our operations and programs.
  5. Is Al-Mujadilah a member of Qatar Foundation (QF)? QF is a non-profit organization made up of many entities working in education, research, and community development. Being a member of QF means being a member of a unique ecosystem that addresses Qatar’s most pressing challenges; creating local, regional, and global impact; and empowering people to shape both the present and the future.
  6. What is the history upon which Al-Mujadilah lays its foundation? Al-Mujadilah is a center and mosque that builds on the rich history of Muslim women and their contribution to their societies and the world. Women’s spaces in Islam have existed for more than 14 centuries across various cultures and continents, with a great influence on their wider societies. We seek to shine a light on that tradition and the stories of women leaders who came before us, and to create space and community that enable the extraordinary women of our present day to achieve their goals and navigate the challenges of modern life.

  1. Is Al-Mujadilah for women only? Yes, with one exception: Jumma prayer every week. Otherwise, Al Mujadilah is for women only during working days and hours from Sunday to Thursday as it offers a space for learning and research. 
  2. Who leads the prayers for women at the Center? During working days: Prayers are led by the most-learned woman in Quran. As for Friday prayers, they are led by an imam provided by the Ministry of Awqaf, as regulated throughout Qatar.
  3. Is it permissible for women to lead other women in prayer? The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) permitted Umm Waraqah, a companion who collected the Holy Qur’an, to lead the people of her home in prayer. Most scholars accept women leading other women in prayer.
  4. Will a woman be leading men in prayer? Our mosque is for women only, there will never be a situation where women lead men in prayer.
  5. Are there Jum'ah prayers at Al-Mujadilah?We are happy to offer Friday prayers at Al-Mujadilah led by an imam from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. We provide separate male ablution areas and shoe storage. English translation of the sermon is available.
  6. Will there be Taraweeh and Qiyam Ul-Layl prayers at Al-Mujadilah during Ramadan? Al-Mujadilah will offer a full Ramadan programthat will be announced before its start. This will include community gatherings around Iftar, education, and worship.
  7. Will there be a female call to prayer? No. The call to prayer will be the standard recording announced throughout Education City.

    1. Is the programming schedule fixed? 
      The Programs & Events schedule is regularly updated and posted on the website. To participate in a program, you must register. Any change will be communicated directly to registered participants.
    2. What are the requirements to register in programs at Al-Mujadilah? 
      Our programs are open to women 14 years old and above. Some programs will be offered in Arabic, while others will be offered in English. A few programs might have prerequisites for those who register - refer to Programs & Events for more information.
    3. How can I apply for the programs?
      You can apply directly through the website at Programs & Events. Al-Mujadilah offers various religious, developmental, social, and research programs.
    4.  How can I choose the right level of program/course? 
      We recommend that you check the requirements of each program and level of experience required before applying on the Programs & Events page. To receive tailored program suggestions, we recommend you fill out the survey at registration and complete your Al-Mujadilah profile.
    5. Will the programs be conducted physically or virtually? 
      All programs will be held physically at the Al-Mujadilah building. Please visit the Contact Us page which has a map to our location.  
    6. Are the programs delivered in Arabic or English? 
      Programs are delivered in Arabic or English depending on program content and the instructor. Please refer to the Programs & Events page for more information.
    7. Who are the instructors offering programs? 
      Instructors go through a rigorous selection process and are carefully chosen from local, regional, and international talent with a broad range of backgrounds and expertise. Please refer to the Programs & Events page for more information.
    8. What is the duration of each program? 
      Most programs run between 1-2 hours. Please refer to the Programs & Events page for more information.
    9.  If I could not register for a program, will it be offered again? 
      Some programs may be offered again in the future, depending on community interest and instructor availability.
    10. Can I register for more than one program? 
      Yes, and we hope you do, so long as the program schedules are not conflicting.
    11. Are the tickets refundable or exchangeable? 
      Program tickets are not exchangeable, however paid programs may be eligible for a refund for a period of time. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for full details.

    13. What are the payment methods? 
      We accept payment for programs via card.

  2. Do visitors have to pay a fee to enter the Center? No. It is a public space where entrance is free. There are, however, activities, courses, and programs that may have a fee. For more information, please visit our website.
  3. Is entry allowed only for adult women? Are families welcome? Thank you for respecting our women-only space, children below 7 years old will not be permitted into our indoor spaces – mosque, library, café and gathering spaces. No men will be permitted inside the building or our grounds and gardens at any time.  
  4. Can my father/brother/husband accompany me to activities and classes? The center itself is a women-only space, designed to allow women a space of their own to study, pray, and gather.  
  5. Is there a dress code for the Center? The Center is a public space. All visitors are requested to adhere to the dress code for public spaces in line with local culture and Islamic traditions, particularly when inside the mosque area.  
  6. Is there a parking space at the Center? The Center has a large parking lot with easy walkways to the entrance.  
  7. Is there a coffee shop or restaurant at the Center? Yes, you can enjoy a delicious meal at Blended during your visit. We offer indoor and outdoor seating for you to enjoy the surroundings of the Center. To maintain the sanctity of the space, eating is restricted to the cafe area and prohibited in the multipurpose and prayer area. Drinks with a lid will be allowed in the multipurpose area but not in the prayer space.  
  8. Am I allowed to take photos inside the Center and its spaces? Official videography and photography require a permit that you can obtain by emailing the Center directly or following the link on our website. For the privacy and comfort of other women, please ensure that any photos you take do not include other visitors and should only be taken in the cafe or multipurpose area.
  9. Are there any rules or regulations for visitors to enter the Center? Visitors are kindly requested to remain courteous of the environment and respectful of the culture and traditions. A full list of rules and regulations can be found here
  10.  Is the Center accessible to people with disabilities? Our team has attended accessibility trainings to assist visitors with disabilities and to ensure that our programs and events are inclusive and accessible to all. Additionally, our building has the following accessibility features:  All entrances are sloped to comply with ADA regulations and can be accessed through an automatic door. We have three ADA compliant washrooms, one shower, five accessible parking spaces, and our room signs are also written in braille.

What payment methods are accepted?
We accept the following payment methods: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Credit Card, and Debit Card. You can choose the most convenient option for you during the checkout process.

Attendance is restricted to women only, and open to academics, researchers, professionals, and students with a keen interest in the history, debates, and lived realities of Muslim women in public life. We welcome participants from diverse fields who can contribute to and benefit from the discussions and networking opportunities.

Jadal will take place at Al-Mujadilah Center & Mosque for Women, which is in Education City, Doha, Qatar. The venue is easily accessible by car and bus. Detailed directions can be found on our website.

Yes for speakers, accommodation and an economy flight ticket will be covered.

If you would like your paper to be considered for edited volume and honorarium of (3,000 Qatari Riyals), then you need to submit your paper in advance.

English and Arabic, and we will have live translation.

We want to create a space for meaningful exchange of ideas and thus the capacity for Jadal will be no more than 100 speakers/attendees.

Jadal is the annual gathering for Al-Mujadilah which is a Mosque and Center for Muslim women.
