Managing Stress and Building Resilience

Join us in this interactive program that combines understanding stress according to modern psychology, developing practical skills to manage it, and drawing inspiration from the concepts of tranquility found in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah. Extending beyond a discussion of anxiety and stress, the program offers participants an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences, explore new tools, and develop a personalized, actionable plan.

Program Outline

  • Day one: Exploring stress triggers and thought patterns

Participants will explore how the mind and body respond to stress, and how a thought such as “I won’t be able to handle this” can intensify stress even before an event takes place. Each participant will practice creating a personal stress map by reflecting on questions such as: What situations cause me stress? What do I tell myself when they occur? What do I feel? And how do I respond?

Next, participants will apply lessons from the exercise “What is the evidence? What is another possible explanation?” to everyday situations. The exercise will help them reconsider worst-case-scenario thinking, and the tendency to overestimate danger, enabling them to develop a more balanced perspective without denying the difficulty of the situation.

  • Day two: Cultivating balance and tranquility in everyday life

The program will shift toward strategies participants can use when responsibilities pile up or stress persists. Through the exercise “Spheres of action,” participants will categorize their concerns into three areas: matters they can take action to address; matters for which they need support; and matters beyond their control that require patience and Tawakkul (trust in Allah). Participants will also practice setting priorities, formulating a calm response to emotionally triggering situations, and establishing appropriate boundaries without experiencing excessive guilt. Day two will also include a special exercise titled “Find a Qur’anic verse that brings peace to your heart.”

Working in small groups, participants will explore relevant verses from the Qur’an and authentic hadiths related to worry, fear, Tawakkul, patience, and hope. Each group will select a text, read it in its proper context, and discuss two questions: What meaning or guidance does this text offer us? How can it guide a practical response to a stressful situation? Participants may begin with the following verses from the Holy Qur’an: “Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.” (Qur’an 13:28); as well as: “And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He is sufficient for them.” (Qur’an 65:3). They may also reflect on the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ: “Be keen on what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not give up.”

At the end of the program, participants will develop a personal two-week plan for maintaining emotional balance. The plan will identify one source of stress, a thought that needs to be reconsidered, a practical step to be taken, and a thoughtfully chosen Qu’ranic verse or a hadith from the Sunnah with which to face that particular situation.
