Learning About learning

Learning at Al-Mujadilah

Learning is at the heart of our mission to revive the mosque as a center of learning. Our classrooms aim to make Islamically grounded knowledge accessible to learners of all ages, and to develop the skills of Muslim women across a variety of areas.

Our approach to learning

Our approach to learning is informed by Tarbiya, a model of integrated development with a long history in Islam. Classical scholars used Tarbiya to describe a type of holistic education where your religious learning takes places alongside personal and societal development.

Rooted in the Tarbiya model, our learning programs help women answer everyday questions with confidence and faith, and help them use what they learn to benefit their communities.

Our learning objectives

Grow in religious confidence

Build a sound understanding of the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the Islamic tradition, and gain the confidence to engage with it directly as active participants rather than passive recipients.

Develop as a whole person

Develop the self-awareness and intellectual humility to flourish in every part of life, from personal growth and family life to local and global dialogues nourished by faith and Muslim women’s perspectives.

Belong and serve

Find a place in a community of women, built on companionship, mentorship, and shared learning around the mosque, and carry that outward through service to family, community, and society.

Learn for life

Embrace learning as a lifelong journey that unfolds gradually, so that knowledge continues to deepen into understanding and practice across every stage of life.

Learning streams

Our public events and specialized classes fall into three streams: religious, personal, and communal.

Religious programs

Religious programs foster spiritual development and promote the place of faith in our daily lives.

Personal programs

Personal programs address women’s integrated wellbeing through classes on physical, emotional, intellectual, and economic enhancement.

Communal programs

Communal programs aim at community building through events, forums, and support circles that encourage participants to network and exchange ideas.

Ri'aya

Ri’aya helps Muslim women aged 17 to 22 learn to think critically by studying Islam and its history, and engaging with global challenges and trends. We'll share more about the program and its global alumni community soon.
