The People of Al-Mujadilah
‘The People of Al-Mujadilah’ is documentary that aims to capture human and emotive moments that reflect the lived experiences, voices, and presence of the women who form the community of Al-Mujadilah.
A young woman brings her mother and child to pray. A group of classmates gather in the library to work on an assignment. Friends sign up together to volunteer, as scholars convene to present their research. Strangers sit next to each other at a lecture only to leave as friends.
Diverse stories in one place: a place intentionally created to prioritize women.
“I don’t think we understood how important this project is and how many people it would impact and touch.”
“If we want women to come in here and feel differently, and think differently, and ask differently, then we have to design it from the ground up... differently.”
We sit down with a number of these women, asking them what this center means to them, what they feel within its walls, and what they hope to build through it.
We also hear from the staff of Al-Mujadilah, those who spend the majority of their days in the building, as they share insight into the inspiration and purpose at the heart of the center.
These women are the soul of the place.
